December 13, 2007

Earlier in the week we had some rain and cool weather here in Benson, AZ.  It even snowed on the peaks of the mountains that were over 7,000 feet.  Listening to the weather from Tucson, about 50 miles to our northwest, it was stated that Mt. Lemmon had snow down to 5,000 feet and over two feet on the top.  Margie and I wanted to do some shopping in Tucson, so I decided we could drive to the summit of Mt. Lemmon while that close.  The road up to the gap of the mountain is about 26 miles and starts at an elevation of 2400 ft and climbs to just over 8,000 ft.  Mt. Lemmon tops out at 9,175 ft.

The road up starts off in a Saguaro forest.

Saguaro grow up to around 4,000 ft in elevation.

When you leave the Saguaro behind,  the rock formations begin.

We started seeing snow at around 5,000 feet

The rock formations covered with snow were beauitful.

At about 7,000 feet, the mountain is covered with trees.

This is at 8,000 feet.  The snow is 2 feet deep.

The Visitor's center was open.  You can see here that the snow is over 2 feet.
