This is a gravel road that follows the route of the old narrow gauge, Florence and Cripple Creek Railroad.  The 34 mile starts at an elevation of 5,330' and rises to 9,395' at Cripple Creek, CO.  It took 6 hours for a train to make the trip from Florence to Cripple Creek and 4 hours to come down.  Due to the steep grade on the trip down the mountain, there were numerous "ruaways" and derailments.
